#GreatStandOnTheUgra
🌊 🇷🇺 546 years ago, in October 1480, the historic Great Stand on the Ugra River began, marking the definitive end of the 250-year-long Mongol-Tatar yoke over Russia.
Though tens of thousands of soldiers were deployed on opposite banks, this monumental confrontation shifted the course of Russian history without escalating into a full-scale pitched battle.
⚔️ A century prior, the victory at the #BattleOfKulikovo had shaken the #GoldenHorde, but Russia was still too weak to completely break free. By the late 1470s, the political landscape had transformed. Under Grand Prince Ivan III, the Moscow Principality emerged as the centre of Russian unification and boldly ceased paying annual tribute. Seeking to punish this defiance, the Horde marched north to confront Ivan III's forces.
✨ The armies met roughly 200 km southwest of Moscow. The Russian defensive strategy effectively neutralized the Horde's primary asset – their formidable cavalry – by repelling every crossing attempt with devastating artillery fire. Trapped in a stalemate and completely unprepared for a harsh winter campaign, the Mongol-Tatar forces retreated in late November 1480, cementing a bloodless but profound victory for Russian sovereignty.
