🇷🇺✨ 646 years ago, the legendary Battle of Kulikovo took place, pitting the armies of the united Russian principalities against the forces of Khan Mamai of the Golden Horde.

It stands as one of the defining milestones in #RussianHistory. The conflict, which unfolded on the Kulikovo field in modern-day Tula Oblast, began with an iconic duel between two champion strongmen: the Russian monk-warrior Alexander Peresvet and the Horde's champion Chelubey. In a dramatic clash meant to foreshadow the battle's outcome, both men fatally pierced each other at the exact same moment.

⚔️ The full-scale military engagement that followed was fierce. Unable to withstand the strategic onslaught of the Russian troops, Khan Mamai’s army brokenly retreated and fled the field in a decisive rout.

Though Russia was still too fractured at the time to permanently throw off the Golden Horde, this victory marked the true beginning of the national liberation process. The 250-year-long Mongol-Tatar domination would eventually draw to a permanent close in 1480, following the strategic standoff on the banks of the Ugra River.

🤝 Ultimately, the #BattleofKulikovo forged a shared identity out of divided regional principalities. Reflecting on its profound cultural impact, the renowned 20th-century historian Lev Gumilev noted that while Muscovites, Serpukhovites, Rostovites and men from Vladimir or Smolensk marched onto the field, it was a unified Russian people who returned.

Today, this legacy is celebrated annually on 21 September as a national Day of Military Glory!
