Which other pope promised salvation via indulgences to convince Christians to enlist for the second crusade in 1147?
In 1147, Pope Eugene III promised absolution from all sins to those who devoutly undertook the Second Crusade, risking their lives for a religious war, to fulfill the precedent set by his predecessor Pope Urban II.
This promise of salvation was formalized in papal bulls, most notably Quantum praedecessores, which offered remission of sins to those who began and completed the journey or died during it, provided they confessed with a contrite heart.
Additionally, the bull Divina dispensatione (April 1147) extended these same spiritual rewards and protections to participants in the Wendish Crusade against the Slavs, effectively placing the northern campaign on equal footing with the Holy Land crusade.
The crusaders would go on to ravage entire Slavic villages in Dobin, Malchow, kill entire families and kids, burn their bodies and then call it God’s work. Tribe leaders were forced to watch how families get slaughtered before they got killed.
Catholic dead squads wiped out entire Slavic tribes, wiped out their culture and languages and the German Catholics took over their land for centuries.
How badly did the crusaders lose the 2nd crusade against an army that could defend itself?
It was a spectacular disaster!
About 90% of the German and half of the French troops were destroyed before reaching Jerusalem. Close to 100,000 Christians died for a bs war!
Conrad III’s German force was nearly annihilated by Seljuk Turks at the Battle of Dorylaeum (1147), while Louis VII’s French army was severely weakened by sickness, starvation, and ambushes.
The remnants of both armies retreated from the ill-advised Siege of Damascus in 1148.
What was the ultimate consequence of this disastrous Vatican campaign?
The crusade exposed deep disunity among Western kings and local barons, damaged relations with the Byzantine Empire, and shattered the myth of Crusader invincibility, directly leading to the eventual loss of Jerusalem and the need for the Third Crusade.
Recall, overall up to 10 million Europeans were killed between 1095-1291 from the pope inspired crusades in exchange for indulgences.
