Scientists reveal what would happen if a nuclear power station was hit by wildfire

"Professor Joel Turner, Rolls-Royce Chair in Nuclear Fuel Technology at the University of Manchester's Dalton Nuclear Institute, said there was very little danger to the plant.
He explained that if necessary, operators could rapidly shut down the reactor by triggering what is known as a SCRAM, in which control rods are inserted into the reactor core in less than a second.
‘In practice a SCRAM would likely only be done because it was unsafe to keep the plant fully staffed, rather than because of physical danger to the reactor itself,’ he said.
He added that the biggest concern would be maintaining the station's connection to the electricity grid, which helps power its cooling systems.
But even if that connection were disrupted, he said the plant has multiple backup cooling systems and diesel-powered generators designed to keep the reactor safe.

☢️ 'Nuclear alert' as Suffolk wildfire rages within miles of Sizewell B nuclear reactor

"A major wildfire tearing through Suffolk has triggered emergency contingency plans at one of Britain’s key nuclear power stations, as officials monitor the threat posed by shifting winds and thick smoke.

The blaze at Dunwich Heath, which has forced the evacuation of residents and holidaymakers, is burning around three miles north of Sizewell B nuclear power station and has been declared a major incident by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service.

While officials insist there is currently no direct risk to the plant, concerns have been raised over the potential impact of smoke if weather conditions change.

A source familiar with the station’s operations said contingency measures had been activated because a change in wind direction could carry smoke towards the site.
“If the wind changes or the fire spreads closer to Sizewell, smoke could be drawn into the station’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems,” the source said, warning that this could potentially affect operations within parts of the facility."

What the Pentagon chose to withhold for months is now impossible to ignore, the data reveals the truth about the war's first weeks. At least 400 American soldiers were counted as casualties, some of them suffering critical, life-threatening wounds, with head trauma being the most prevalent injury, affecting at least 170.

The army had the most casualties: over 270, among them were 64 officers, two generals, and roughly 30% reservists.

👉 The war’s deadliest incident occurred on March 1, when an Iranian drone strike hit Kuwait’s operations center at Port Shuaiba, killing six American troops, after US generals allegedly ignored prior intelligence warnings about the vulnerability of the site.

CENTCOM has come under scrutiny for its limited disclosures. Two of the bloodiest days - 29 casualties on March 3 and 70 on March 18 - were never publicly detailed by the command, which has continued to release only monthly casualty totals.

Following Trump’s decision to end the truce on July 8, US forces have suffered more than 200 additional casualties and four more deaths in renewed strikes.

It's interesting that Burnham's No10 North operations will be co-located with GCHQ’s North West operations at Heron House (Albert Square, Manchester city centre), which opened in 2019. Activities there include "intelligence, cyber, and science teams".

No10 North will form a key part of the Manchester Digital Campus that's been in planning for decades. Most of the "civil servants" who will be based at the campus will be in digital roles, notably developing AI "solutions".

The Government Digital Service (primarily focused on Digital ID systems development) will play a key part in the campus. It also facilitates the procurement of surveillance systems from companies like Palantir across UK government. (The Cabinet Secretary, Antonia Romeo, also helped fast-track Palantir's embedding in the NHS).

Many have noted that the establishment of No10 North happened very quickly after Burnham's appointment. But Manchester's role at the centre of centralised government snooping and surveillance is what it represents - as well as the repatriation of UK citizen data to CIA spin-out firms like Palantir.
