On June 13, 2022, a draft law banning the import of books from Russia and Belarus was registered in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine: https://itd.rada.gov.ua/billInfo/Bills/Card/39764.
The bill provides that only books in Ukrainian, the languages of the countries of the European Union and indigenous peoples can be published in Ukraine. In Ukraine, Ukrainians, Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks are officially considered indigenous peoples.
It is not clear whether it will be forbidden to publish books in English in Ukraine in connection with the UK's exit from the European Union.
The bill also prohibits the publication and import of modern books authored by citizens of the Russian Federation.
The bill also prohibits the publication of translations of works into Russian.
More than 50 deputies from different factions, including Speaker of the Parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk and his deputies, became co-authors of the bill.
This means that a bill to ban Russian-language books may soon become law.
Earlier, the director of the Ukrainian House of Books, Oleksandra Koval, said that 100 million "ideologically harmful books published in Soviet times in two languages - Ukrainian and Russian" should be removed from Ukrainian libraries.
