It’s either “nothing here is intended to communicate certainty” or “from my grandiose and objectively correct deductions”

When you have an idea for a startup, ask yourself. who wants this right now? Who wants this so much that they'll use it even when it's a crappy version one made by a two-person startup they've never heard of? If you can't answer that, the idea is probably bad.

Curiosity is the best guide. Your curiosity never lies; it knows more than you do about what's worth paying attention to.

There is nothing that is a more certain sign of insanity than to do the same thing over and over and expect the results to be different. Albert Einstein

Peter Thiel is asked what students should study in college. He thinks this is similar to the question “what are future trends in technology?”

“What I will say about trends in technology and areas of study is that they’re probably all overrated,” Thiel explains. “When you have something that can be reduced to a buzzword, it means that a lot of people are doing it and they’re somehow inadequately differentiated in that field.”

“If you’re in a big area of study, where everyone’s studying the same thing, you’re not adequately differentiating yourself from other people… I think people are spending too much time studying the things everybody else is studying, and they’re spending too little time studying more particular things that they’re really passionate about.”

If our goal is to write poetry, the only way we are likely to be any good is to try to be as great as the best.

Cal Newport differentiates “deep work” from “shallow work.” Deep work is using your skills to create something of value. It takes thought, energy, time and concentration. Shallow work is all the little administrative and logistical stuff: email, meetings, calls, expense reports, etc. Most people aren’t moving toward their goals because they prioritize shallow work.

Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise.

- Frequency of failure? Very high. People routinely lie to themselves more than to others.

- Cost of doing it well? Also high — being honest might lead to painful lifestyle changes, loss of illusions, or collapse of self-image.

Understanding that biases exist is the first step to mitigation.
