🌎✨ Culture Share Saturday: Discover North Dakota! ✨🌎

Did you know that North Dakota is the #1 honey producer in the United States? 🍯🐝 That’s a lot of busy bees at work!

Winter in North Dakota also means snowy days and a bit of extra effort—like shoveling driveways ❄️💪. It’s all part of daily life in this northern state!

Here’s a fun fact: the teddy bear 🧸 was inspired by President Theodore Roosevelt! You can explore his legacy at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, where you might spot wild horses, bison, and breathtaking landscapes 🌄✨

And don’t forget about sunflowers 🌻—these bright, cheerful flowers can grow 6–10 feet tall (or even taller!) and are famous for turning their faces toward the sun ☀️

👩‍🏫 Classroom Activity Idea: “North Dakota Exploration Stations”
Set up 4 stations around your classroom:
🍯 Honey & Bees – Students learn about honey production and create a short “bee report”
❄️ Winter Life – Students describe how people adapt to snowy weather
🧸 Teddy Bear History – Students read a short story about Theodore Roosevelt and share one new fact
🌻 Sunflower Science – Students label parts of a sunflower or measure and compare heights

🌎 Culture Share Saturday: Kansas, USA

This week, let’s explore Kansas—a state known for its deep cultural roots and wide-open landscapes.

🎶 Kansas has a rich musical heritage, especially in jazz and blues. These genres, rooted in African American traditions, have shaped American music with their improvisation, emotion, and storytelling.

🌾 Often called part of America’s “breadbasket,” Kansas plays a key role in agriculture, helping feed the nation through its vast farmland and strong farming traditions.

🌪️ Kansas is also the home of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, one of the most famous stories in American culture. Her journey from Kansas to a magical land—and back home again—has inspired generations.

💬 Classroom idea: Ask students to imagine they are traveling from their hometown to a magical place like Dorothy. Have them describe what they would see, who they might meet, and what they would miss about home. Then, share and compare their “journeys” in small groups.

This week let’s look at Missouri, a state that sits at a cultural crossroads. Geographically, it’s usually considered part of the Midwest, but linguistically and culturally it shares many features with the American South. For example, you may hear people say “y’all” there — a word strongly associated with Southern states like Texas or Mississippi.

Missouri is also home to an interesting food tradition. At the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, iced tea and the ice cream cone became widely popular in the United States.

Classroom idea: Ask students whether Missouri should be considered Midwestern or Southern. What defines a region — geography, history, accent, vocabulary? Introduce the word “y’all” and compare it with ways Russian distinguishes singular and plural “you.”
