🇺🇸🌽 Culture Share Saturday: Iowa

This week we’re exploring Iowa — a state known for literature, friendliness, and road travel culture. Iowa is home to Iowa City, part of the UNESCO Cities of Literature network, celebrating books, writing, and literary festivals.

People here are often described as “Iowa nice” — friendly, polite, and indirect (for example, saying, “I might be wrong, but…”). Because the U.S. is so large, semi-trucks transport goods across long distances, and Iowa is known for its major truck stops serving travelers.

💬 Discussion ideas:
• What other facts can you find about Iowa? How is it similar or different from the place where you live?
• Is there a region in Russia known for being especially polite?

📝 Classroom Activity Idea:
Ask students to create a short “Welcome to Iowa” presentation or travel brochure highlighting literature, local culture, and road travel. They can compare it with their home region or another region in Russia.

🗣️ Teaching Tip Tuesday: The English Stress System

Feeling stressed about teaching stress? Don’t worry — this is the good kind of stress. 😄

Here’s a quick refresher for the classroom:
🔹 Word Stress – One syllable takes prominence: REcord vs. reCORD.
🔹 Sentence Stress – Content words carry meaning: “I NEED to CALL my FRIEND.”
🔹 Contrastive Stress – Shifting stress changes focus: “I said HE stole the money.”
🔹 Rhythm & Timing – English is stress-timed: “I WANT to GO to the STORE.” (regular beats on stressed syllables)

👏 Try marking stress in dialogues or having students tap the rhythm to build awareness.

🇺🇸✨ Culture Share Saturday: Discover Michigan! ✨🇺🇸

📅 Did you know? Michigan became the 26th state in the United States on January 26, 1837. Its nickname is “The Wolverine State” 🐾 — even though wolverines are rarely found there today!

🌊 Geography fun fact: A peninsula is land almost surrounded by water but connected to the mainland. Thanks to the Great Lakes, Michigan has two peninsulas! The Lower Peninsula is famously shaped like a left mitten 🧤.

📬 One of a kind: Michigan is home to the only floating post office in the world 🚤📦. Mail is delivered by boat across the Great Lakes to island communities.

🚗 Motor City: Detroit earned the nickname “Motor City” because it became the center of the U.S. automobile industry, home to companies like Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler.

🤔 Classroom Discussion
•
Does your region have a fun or interesting nickname?
• What’s a famous industry or product from your hometown or country?
• Do you know of any other geographical features that are shaped like another object?

🎉 Friday Fun: Idiom Spotlight — “Break the Ice” 🧊

Sometimes it can be hard to get a conversation started — in class, at a meeting, or before giving a speech. That’s when we break the ice!

👉 To break the ice means to say or do something that helps people relax and start interacting.

🎤 Speaking tip: When giving a speech, try breaking the ice by asking the audience a quick show-of-hands question or sharing a short, relatable moment. It helps create a connection right away.
