TX Dem Gov. Nominee Gina Hinojosa: "No Question" Border Crossings Are "Way Down" Because Of Trump

Texas state Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D) joins Meet the Press NOW to discuss her tightening gubernatorial race against Gov. Greg Abbott (R), as she aims to win a statewide seat for Democrats for the first time in over 30 years.

KRISTEN WELKER: Well, let me ask you about his record. One of the big issues in this election, immigration, of course, you've spoken about the need for a secure border. Are there policies from the president, from Governor Abbott, that you support, given the fact that unlawful deportations have dropped significantly on the president's watch?

STATE REP. GINA HINOJOSA: So I'm from the border. I'm from Brownsville, Texas, on the border with Mexico. I want a secure border. But what is happening with these ICE raids is making us less secure, not more. We had a man who was shot in the back in Austin, Texas, last week with the bullet lodged in his back. He slept on the floor of a detention center with no pain medication. We had two weeks before that two American 17-year old boys on their way to enlist in the Marines be pulled out of their cars from ICE and beaten. We had a man who was on the way to work in Houston, Texas, a few months ago, and he was killed by ICE. It was a case of mistake identity. When federal law enforcement officers, when ICE, is shooting first and asking questions later, nobody is safe. And so, there is a lot of anger about what is happening, and people are scared, and people want change.

KRISTEN WELKER: Well, let me ask you. Attempted border crossings at the southwest border have, as I just said, have plummeted since President Trump took office. Do you give him credit for that, that part of his policies?

STATE REP. GINA HINOJOSA: There is no question that crossings are way down, and there is no question it is because of President Trump.
