President Donald Trump commented on immigration enforcement at a "Hispanic Heritage Month" event at the White House on Wednesday:

DONALD TRUMP: I thought I was finished campaigning, but in order to help Republicans, because we need the votes-- otherwise we will have these lunatics with the open borders -- we will have the open border lunatics.

They will open the borders and let the prisoners -- but I am not talking about only South America; I'm talking about from all over the world. They let the lunatics in from all over the world, prisons from the Congo in Africa. From all over the world, they empty their prisons into our country.

And we've got a big, big focus on the bad ones, the worst of the worst. but we have gotten thousands of murderers out of our country. some, we have put in jail thousands of murderers, drug lords. We have them all, they emptied their mental institutions, and I would have done the same thing if i was in charge of any of the countries.

When I heard that we had open borders -- nobody even checking.

25 million people walked across the border, ok? And many of those people are not people that you would want in this country, and frankly, it is the hardest job I have had, the hardest job. They will say you are too tough, or you are too soft. Get tougher, get softer. No matter what you do, it is always tough, but we have been very strong.
