PSA: ShredOS fake malware website
Hey r/selfhosted!
ShredOS (the open-source successor of DBAN) for secure wiping of drives is recommended frequently on data-storage related subreddits. The maintainer and I (as one of the more active developers) have been concerned with an influx of people recommending and downloading it from the top-listed "official" website on Google (shredos [dot\] org) - this website is fake and contains malware. It is unfortunately actively SEO'd to appear on the top and lure users towards it.
If you have a second, please report this malicious website to Google:
https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report\_phish/
Please only ever download ShredOS or Nwipe from the official GitHub repositories.
In other (happier) news, the latest iteration of ShredOS now supports hardware-native secure erase (sanitize) for modern ATA SSD and NVMe - which may help more confident resale of such devices in times when prices are at an all time high.
Stay safe out there and thanks for keeping the hobby (and re-sale of HDDs) alive!
