Looking for a self-hosted personal knowledge base that can publish selected notes as a website
I'm looking for a tool to manage my personal notes and knowledge base, with the option to publish selected notes as a public website. I've been looking into SilverBullet, which seems promising, but I'd like to explore a few alternatives before settling on a setup.
I'm looking for something geared toward building a long-term knowledge base of notes, ideas, research, and documentation, rather than a traditional blogging platform.
Ideally, it would have:
* **Easy note-taking:** A good writing experience with Markdown support.
* **Public publishing:** The ability to publish notes as a browsable website.
* **Knowledge organization:** Backlinks, tags, folders, or other ways to connect related notes.
* **Data ownership:** Notes stored in an accessible, portable format without being locked into a proprietary platform.
* **Low maintenance:** Minimal hassle when it comes to hosting, updates, and publishing.
* **Private and public notes:** The ability to keep some notes private while sharing others publicly.
SilverBullet is currently on my radar, but I'm also considering Obsidian with a publishing solution, Quartz, DokuWiki, and other personal wiki or digital garden setups.
For anyone who's built something like this, I'd love to hear about your experience:
* What tool or setup are you using, and why did you choose it?
* How straightforward is it to publish new notes and keep everything updated?
* How much ongoing work is required for hosting and maintenance?
* What limitations or frustrations have you run into?
* If you were starting from scratch today, would you choose the same setup?
I'm particularly interested in solutions that work well as a **personal knowledge base first, with public publishing as a feature**, rather than tools designed primarily for blogging.
I'd appreciate any recommendations, especially from people who've been using their setups for a while. Thanks!
