filex: self-hosted file manager in one Go binary that connects disks, S3, SFTP and SMB and serves the same tree back over S3, WebDAV, SFTP and NFS

I'm the developer of filex. It's a file manager and sharing app with a web UI, MIT licensed, and it runs as one Go binary or one container. SQLite is the default; PostgreSQL and MySQL/MariaDB work too.

It aims at the gap between a directory listing with uploads and a groupware suite you install for the file tab. There is no calendar, contacts, mail or chat.

What it does:

- Connects local disks, S3, SFTP, FTP/FTPS, WebDAV and SMB side by side. Files stay where they are, in their normal format. Trash, versions and drafts live in hidden folders at the storage root.
- Serves the same tree back over S3 and WebDAV (on by default) and SFTP, FTPS and NFSv3 (opt-in), with the same permissions, trash and quota as the web UI.
- Desktop app for Windows, Linux and macOS that keeps the folders you pick synced both ways. The rest stays online.
- Share links with PIN, expiry and download limits, OIDC and LDAP/AD login, roles, encrypted folders, and an MCP server for AI agents.
- Audit log, multi-tenancy, and an explorer you can embed in your own app as a Vue 3, React or web component.
- An app store for plugins: apps that open, convert, sign or edit files in a sandbox, and since 0.55 storage plugins too. Every listing is pinned to its build and checked by the store before it goes up.

New in 0.55, released today: storage plugins from the app store; apps can print through filex, which asks you every time; every file row says whether it is end-to-end encrypted, and an encrypted file is offered to no app; a rename, move or delete over WebDAV, SFTP, FTPS, NFS or the S3 gateway no longer loses rows to a storage scan running beside it. No telemetry. It checks filex.sh for updates once a day and sends only its version string; FILEXUPDATECHECK=0 turns that off.

AI: I build filex with Claude Code. I make the decisions on architecture and how each feature works, and the agent writes most of the code under that direction. More in my reply to the bot.

Coming from File Browser? Point filex at the same folder and the files are used as they are.
