Looking at getting a home hub can I replace ICloud photo sync?

Currently spend about £28 a month on iCloud storage for photos for the family. I’ve been looking to get something set up for a while but with home extension/improvements it’s always on the back burner. With these coming to an end I need something new to do and think if I can replace iCloud this will be the push I need with current hw costs

I ask about iCloud because my other half needs to be able to use it in the same way. Sync overnight and always have access to the images, basically to her nothing will feel like nothing has changed. I’ve done a bit of research and some NAS software seems close but get conflicting info.

Any help/ confirmation would be helpful.

Long term plans are to get CAT 6 installed in the house and then use the server to control all the traffic in the house
