Fake Doctors, Real Friends - 203: Me Ex's Ex Discussion

203: Me Ex’s Ex | Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald

Zach and Donald are mostly N*SYNC; Sean, aka Scott Foley, returns, and the podcast’s lore is now part of the TV series! Sarah Chalke returns to the pod with intern Dr. Sam Tosh, aka Ava Bunn. Chalke gives us another classic Sarah story. Donald shows off his Denzel Washington impersonation, but he forgot his notes. It’s a real return to form at Fake Doctors, Real Friends.

I though John C. McGinley had lost his speedy banter as Dr. Cox in Scrubs 2026, assuming age was the issue. Watching Rooster, 2026, however, seems he hasn't though as he's faster and smoother. I found it was a directos choice for Dr. Cox to emphasize his illness. Glad he's still got it!

Unfortunately, google AI was the only source i could find regarding the Scrubs director's (Aseem Batra) choice to slow Dr. Cox down. And for once, to me, Google AI actually makes sense here...

*"In interviews discussing the 2026 ABC revival of **Scrubs**), showrunner Aseem Batra and original creator Bill Lawrence emphasized a deliberate choice to "talk slow" and slow down the comedic pacing of the revival to mimic the grounded, character-driven tone of Season 1.

Batra noted that rather than leaning entirely into rapid-fire gags, they wanted to give the characters—specifically Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley)—room to breathe as they navigate heavy, realistic lifelines. This pacing shift proved crucial for Dr. Cox's pivotal storyline in Season 1, where he faces a serious health crisis." [Source\](https://www.google.com/search?q=%22Aseem+Batra%22+%22cox%22+to+talk+%22slow%22+%22season+1%22+scrubs+2026&sca_esv=f3de7034d550a016&rlz=1C1ONGR_enGB1127GB1127&biw=851&bih=897&sxsrf=APpeQnve-FiZS2q7pIpaHZj-xWMWK3ov-Q%3A1790820436660&ei=VMC9avvpJ5OJ9u8Pzpv1sAw&uact=5&oq=%22Aseem+Batra%22+%22cox%22+to+talk+%22slow%22+%22season+1%22+scrubs+2026&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiOSJBc2VlbSBCYXRyYSIgImNveCIgdG8gdGFsayAic2xvdyIgInNlYXNvbiAxIiBzY3J1YnMgMjAyNjIIEAAYgAQYogQyBRAAGO8FSKAGUABYogFwAHgBkAEAmAGBAaAB4AGqAQMxLjG4AQPIAQD4AQGYAgKgAuUBmAMAkgcDMS4xoAf9ArIHAzEuMbgH5QHCBwMwLjLIBwKACAE&sclient=gws-wiz-serp)

However, if you watch Rooster, which also stars Steve Carell, it is evident he still has it!

It also appears that he can still memorize his lines very quickly, normally within the hour. This interview in 2021 explains how he does it, and it's rather impressive. [YouTube\](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7dCq8f0D0w)

Keith was arguably Elliot’s best love interest

Obviously a huge part of the show was the will they won’t they between JD and Elliot but rewatching the kinda golden era of scrubs (seasons 5 and 6) and also the Keith era of Elliot, he genuinely was so good for her. We was always so loving and showing up for her. However, he wasn’t always just bending to her will he actually advocated for his feelings in the relationship and made sure it worked well for both of them. And he never asked Elliot to change who she was he met her where she was at, literally let her plan her own proposal. I think in the end Elliot got so caught up on trying to find her ‘soulmate’ that she really let a good relationship go.

Scrubs quiz round 3: one-off patients and running gags only

Round 2 got called easy, and fair enough. This one is only one-off patients and running gags. Original run only, easiest first, answers behind spoiler tags.

1. J.D. plays a game against the Grim Reaper and loses. Which game?

2. Kelso gets free Coffee Bucks muffins for life. How did he win them?

3. In "My Old Lady", J.D. says one in three patients admitted will die. J.D., Turk and Elliot each get a patient. How many of the three make it?

4. In "My Musical", what's the name of the patient who hears everyone singing?

5. J.D. and Turk put Steak Night on hold to sit with a dying patient through his last night. What's his name?

Answers:

1: >!Connect Four. Death wins diagonally. Pretty sneaky.!<

2: >!He guessed the number of coffee beans in a jar. J.D. won first, then a recount gave it to Kelso.!<

3: >!None. All three die.!<

4: >!Patti Miller!<

5: >!George Valentine!<

5/5 and you've earned the right to call round 2 easy.

I miss the Podcast

One thing I'm missing is the Podcast. I think it is a cool trend that more and more shows have an insider Podcast talking about this weeks episode. I believe starting with the Breaking Bad one, at least that's the first one I listened to. There was the rewatch Podcast. Somehow I hoped they'd switch from that to the "Scrubs the official Podcast with Zach and Donald. Mmmmhhhmmmmm".
But maybe at this pace they were too busy shooting?
I'd love to hear some making of and background thoughts n tose episodes, Thoughts from folks behind the scenes. Like the authors, directors, costume, set designers.
I'd also be happy with Joelle Monique as host and Zach and Donals only stopping by every now and then

Storylines I would have liked to see….

I haven’t seen any of season 2 yet but this is how I would have written season 1 of the re-boot!

JD: JD is at first excited about being a divorcé. He thinks being an older Doctor will give him all the cool points he needs for the dating world. He ends is shocked to find out that most of the younger women he flirts with see him as a creep. He ends up sleeping with one of the interns, Elliot finds out and is super disgusted.

Elliot: Elliot is upset that she’s so old to be starting her life over but she is surprised by the new male attention she’s receiving. Especially from one of the buff, older but still too young for her-interns. They sleep together. She’s really embarrassed and doesn’t want anyone to find out but it also gives her a huge confidence boost. The intern is just flirting to boost his rank. She also finds out she’s pregnant and thinks it’s the interns baby.

Turk and Carla: Turn finds out he has arthritis and will not be able to work much longer. Carla decides she’s finally going back to school to become a doctor and we see her learning what it’s like to be an intern. She shows a newfound appreciation for the doctors but can also give a solid perspective to the new nurses.

Season 1 ends with Elliot and JD bonding about how complicated dating after the divorce is. Elliot tells JD she’s pregnant and she’s afraid it’s the interns baby. But we find out later in the next season it’s JDs! And then season 2 is about them navigating co-parenting and possibly falling in love again.

Anyone else not loving the reboot, or is it just me?

I’ll start off by saying, I like the reboot. I enjoy watching it and look forward to new episodes coming out. It’s miles better than whatever season 9 or scrubs med school was. But I don’t love it the way that I loved the original series.

It still feels like it’s mostly riding on the fame and success of the original series, with some new jokes thrown in here and there.

The new characters are great, but no where near as good as some of the old, brilliantly written characters like Janitor, Ted, Laverne, etc.

Maybe part of it is that I’m in a very different part of my life, and maybe it doesn’t quite hit the same as it did. I was in middle school/high school/college watching the original series, and rewatched it multiple times in medical a school.

Now I’m a full blown doctor and some of the medical and hospital culture inaccuracies bother me a lot more, so that may be part of it too. The last episode really bugged me with Tosh trying to pick her specialty, when that isn’t how that works at all in the real world in medicine. (And as a pediatrician, I hate how they portray pediatrics as being an easier specialty).

Everyone here seems to LOVE the new series so just wanted to see if anyone else is in a similar camp as me.
