Serious Thoughts on using low spec laptop as a "project"?

Hello Linux enjoyers,

Im interested in sourcing some opinions and thoughts from this subreddit. So i started using linux almost 2 years ago and think its been one of the greatest decisions ive ever made with my own personal computers. What I enjoy a lot is taking on random projects to tinker with tools and learn how to build things at home.

One idea ive had for a "project" is getting a low spec laptop for the sake of learning to live with very finite limits like RAM and CPU. The idea came because im sorta in the market for a "surfing the web and basic use" laptop so I was already trying to stay pretty low budget as I do not have high expectations for said laptop.

Im not decided on a specific machine but I thought this could be a useful way to really comprehend what it means to have a low end CPU, 8gb RAM, no discrete GPU and maybe a 256gb SSD.

I already have a nice powerful desktop that I can rely on for more demanding tasks I just thought it could be pretty insightful to live with a low end laptop. I was also thinking maybe I could start by digging up and older laptop sitting in a closet from a family member to avoid spending much at all.

With all that said, is this stupid? Any Linux veterans think this would make for a pretty cool educational experience?

And final question, any recommendations on what i am describing here?
