“She settled for him” — Settle Down vs Settle For

what do you make of the phrase ”she settled for me” would you infer for or down?

I believe that when people think of settling down and relationships it isn’t positive. saying someone has settled isn’t meaning they are seeking stable life but instead that they compromised on something.

does anyone know when this shifted? are they now one and the same with the rise of online dating?
