What other directory variables besides "user-emacs-directory" does Emacs use for plugin data and files which don't belong in version control? Are there some conventions or good practices here?

Every other plugin and package likes to place its configuration data in "user-emacs-directory" which is where init.el and other files live and it makes the "user-emacs-directory" cluttered, leaving you with so many entries in .gitignore.


Examples of this are:

custom.el
places.eld
projectile-bookmarks.eld
tramp
transient
eln-cache
elpa

Is there some convention for setting locations for such files?

I guess this means setting a lot of them in early-init.el which I prefer over init.el, or configuring them in use-package.

Are there some built-in Emacs variables for data like this, or is it every package and plugin using a directory based of "user-emacs-directory"?
