Lost Confidence
Hey everybody,
I just wanted to reach out and see if anyone has dealt with imposter syndrome or struggled with rebuilding confidence in aviation.
I started flying about 5 years ago and earned my PPL. I then attended a university flight program, but due to scheduling, there were times where it took around 7 months between earning a rating and getting back on the flight schedule for the next one. I eventually graduated with an associate degree, but needed to find a full-time job, so I had to step away from flying before finishing my CFI.
Fortunately, I’ve never had a checkride failure, and I’m currently sitting around 400 hours. ASEL/AMEL commercial with instrument.
I ended up taking a job in the aviation industry and was really happy there. Things were going well, but after about a year I was laid off. For a while afterward, I honestly wanted nothing to do with aviation. I felt burned by the job and pretty burned out from how slowly my aviation goals had been progressing.
Over the past year, I only flew around 20 hours. Recently, though, I’ve started flying again and am working toward finishing my CFI.
The biggest thing I’ve noticed is how much my confidence has taken a hit. I know I’ve put in the work and have made it this far, but getting back into the airplane after a long break has made me question myself more than I expected.
I’m hoping that once I start flying consistently and grinding out the hours again, that motivation and ambition for an aviation career will come back.
I’m curious if anyone else has gone through something similar. How did you rebuild your confidence and get past the feeling of being behind or doubting yourself? Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
