Started my PPL 2 years ago, life got in the way. Thinking about just flying with a CFI for fun instead of finishing. Thoughts?
Hello everyone, I need your advice and recommendations!
I started my PPL journey almost 2 years ago. However, life completely got in the way—work, frequent business travel, and a mandatory 3-month pause due to life events. Because of all this, I still haven't been able to finish my license.
On the bright side, I did my first solo flight a few months ago in a classic Cessna 172 Skyhawk, and it is an absolutely wonderful memory!
I am 54 years old, so I'm not a young kid anymore 😉. Getting my private pilot license was purely a bucket-list project for leisure purposes. I initially started with 2 hours of lessons per week, but that schedule quickly fell apart. It often dwindled down to two or even just one lesson a month. I know this is highly inconsistent and honestly not enough to build or maintain proficiency.
My CFI is incredible. He has decades of experience in both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. He is humble, extremely safe, and just a great guy all around.
Over the last few months, I’ve realized just how massive the investment of time is to properly learn both the theory and the practical side of aviation. Now, I am questioning whether I should actually push through to the checkride.
My ideal goal would actually be to just continue flying on weekends whenever I feel like it, but always dual with an instructor.
Is this a realistic or common approach ?
Do CFIs mind flying with someone who doesn't necessarily want to check out solo?
What would you recommend I do?
Thank you all for your insights!
