Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar announced on Thursday that Colombia will open its embassy in occupied Jerusalem next Wednesday, joining a small group of countries that have moved their missions from Tel Aviv. Sa'ar said the Democratic Republic of Congo would follow soon.
The move comes under Colombia's new far-right President Abelardo de la Espriella, who has reversed the course of his predecessor, Gustavo Petro.
Petro cut diplomatic ties with Israel in 2024 over the genocide in Gaza, while de la Espriella pledged during his campaign to restore relations and move the embassy to Jerusalem.
De la Espriella won June's runoff by less than one percentage point, after which Petro accused Israel of interfering in the vote and refused to recognize the result.
