The integration of the Beirut and Tripoli ports raises fears of 'indirect normalization' with Israel
Lebanon has formally expressed interest in joining the US-backed India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), amid fears that doing so would amount to “indirect” normalization of relations with Israel.
This week, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun submitted a formal request to French President Emmanuel Macron to join IMEC, a US-backed trade corridor meant to rival China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The IMEC project was publicly announced at the G20 summit in New Delhi in 2023. The trade route would link India to Europe via the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel.
Goods from India would be transported by ships loaded at the Haifa port in northern Israel to Mediterranean ports in southern Europe, including Greece, Italy, and France.
If Lebanon were to join the project, goods would also be loaded on ships at the Beirut and Tripoli ports.
