The meeting comes after months of US pressure on Lebanon to disregard its own laws and hold direct negotiations with Israel
Lebanese and Israeli civilian representatives held their first direct negotiations in decades on 3 December in a meeting held in the southern town of Naqoura, as part of the US-led ceasefire monitoring mechanism.
Lebanon is being represented by former ambassador to the US Simon Karam.
“Following coordination and consultation with the Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Nabih Berri, and the Prime Minister, Dr. Nawaf Salam, the President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, has decided to assign former ambassador and attorney Simon Karam to head the Lebanese delegation to the committee’s meetings,” the Lebanese presidency said in a statement.
Tel Aviv has sent Israeli National Security Council representative Uri Resnick to the talks.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office made a statement on Wednesday morning calling the move “an initial attempt to create a basis for a relationship and economic cooperation between Israel and Lebanon.”
