Local agencies nationwide are now a growing arm of mass deportations, using 287(g) authority renewed by Trump.
287(g) was originally created in 1996, yet the program hardly grew until Trump won in 2016. When Trump returned to office, there were just 135 agreements with ICE. Now, there are more than 2,630. In 2026, 287(g) agency agreements are putting out thousands of arrests every month.
