A Massachusetts housing chief used public credit cards to remodel his own bathroom, then walked on a sweet deferred deal.

Michael Lara ran the Watertown Housing Authority from 2019 to 2025. ⠀

That agency houses low-income, disabled, and elderly tenants. ⠀

Federal prosecutors say he put about $6,200 in personal renovation supplies on WHA cards in 2023. ⠀

The haul included a $1,600 double vanity at Home Depot and about $3,100 at a bathroom showroom for his Norwood house. ⠀

He later became executive director of the Newton Housing Authority.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts charged him with one count of wire fraud.

Lara took a deferred prosecution agreement instead of a trial. ⠀

He must repay the $6,200, stay clean of federal crimes for six months, and resign from Newton.

Public housing money is supposed to fix units for people who cannot afford a contractor.
