π Fields:
Applied Mathematics, Physics, Fluid Mechanics, Computational Science, Mechanical Engineering
Are you fascinated by the complex behavior of fluids and eager to advance your expertise in applied mathematics or physics through cutting-edge research? If you are driven by curiosity about nonlinear wave phenomena and aspire to contribute to the theoretical and computational understanding of interfacial flows, the University of East Angliaβs PhD position in nonlinear waves on liquid cylinders may be the ideal opportunity for your academic journey.
The focus of this PhD studentship is on the mathematical and computational analysis of nonlinear waves on liquid cylinders. The classical RayleighβPlateau instability describes how inviscid liquid jets, in the absence of gravity, become unstable under long-wave perturbations. Recent theoretical work has revealed that when vorticity and swirl are introduced, new types of nonlinear travelling-wave solutions emerge, but their characteristics remain largely unexplored. This project aims to develop advanced computational techniques to compute and analyze these novel wave solutions, with a particular emphasis on solitary waves and their stability.
