The focus of this PhD project is the development of a quantitative, non-destructive, in-situ diagnostic tool to detect metallic lithium plating—one of the most hazardous failure mechanisms in lithium-ion batteries. Lithium plating can silently initiate during aggressive cycling or under certain operating conditions, leading to catastrophic failures such as thermal runaway. Despite its significance, detecting this process in industry-relevant cell formats remains a formidable challenge.
