The focus of this PhD studentship is on advanced materials processing for the safe and effective disposal of mixed uranium and plutonium oxide (DMOX) nuclear wasteforms. As the UK seeks sustainable solutions for managing its plutonium stockpile, DMOX ceramics have emerged as a promising candidate for long-term waste immobilization. Historically, industrial-scale manufacturing of mixed oxide (MOx) fuels has relied on traditional milling techniques to achieve the desired powder properties for fuel pellet fabrication. However, innovative approaches such as Resonant Acoustic Mixing (RAM) are now being explored to enhance efficiency, homogeneity, and reproducibility in the production process.
