💳 FinTech Is Buying Web3: What Are Strategic Investors Really Looking For?
I’m seeing an important shift in crypto M&A: traditional financial companies aren’t acquiring Web3 businesses simply because they’re “crypto”
📊 A recent example is Mastercard and BVNK. In August, Mastercard completed its acquisition of the stablecoin infrastructure company BVNK. The deal had previously been valued at up to $1.8 billion.
For me, this deal highlights what strategic buyers are really looking for today:
🏗️ Infrastructure over hype — technology that can be integrated into an existing financial ecosystem.
💸 Real payment flows — cross-border payments, settlement, payouts, and treasury rather than products that exist only within the crypto ecosystem.
🔗 Fiat ↔ blockchain connectivity — the ability to connect traditional banking rails with stablecoins and on-chain infrastructure.
🛡️ Compliance & scalability — infrastructure that can operate not only as a startup, but within a regulated financial institution.
❓ So if a Web3 company is considering a strategic exit, I would ask one key question:
“What do we already do so well that a bank or global payments company would rather acquire us than build it themselves?”
That, in my view, is where real strategic value in Web3 M&A is being created today.
