Deep in the forests of medieval Russia, a small wooden church became the heart of a spiritual awakening. Saint Sergius of Radonezh sought solitude with God, yet his prayer and humility drew people into the wilderness—and inspired a nation.
He led through example, chopping wood, carrying water, and baking bread for his brothers. According to Church tradition, he blessed Prince Dmitry before the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, while he and his monks sustained the soldiers through prayer.
His life also holds a glimpse of heavenly mystery: the Mother of God appeared to him with the Apostles Peter and John, promising her protection over his monastery.
Saint Sergius reminds us that a life hidden in prayer can bring light far beyond the forest where it begins.
Saint Sergius of Radonezh, pray to God for us.
