Saint Nikandr of Pskov
Saint Nikandr, born Nikon, in 1507 to a peasant family, desired from childhood to follow the ascetic life of Pskov saints. After his father died, he helped his mother enter monastic life, then sought solitude and Scripture. Guided by providence, he withdrew to the wilderness and was tonsured at Krypetsk Monastery as Nikandr. He endured ascetic struggles, temptations, attacks by robbers, and demonic trials, overcoming them through prayer and the intercession of the saints. He returned, to solitude, fasting, prayer, and study of God's holy Word, and served those seeking his counsel. He became known for humility, tears, compassion, and spiritual gifts, praying for visitors and sheltering them. He foretold his death during a Polish invasion and reposed on 24 September 1581. A monastery was built at his wilderness in 1584; he was glorified in 1696, and his holy relics were uncovered.
