English at St. Nicholas

Our next Divine Liturgy in English will be this Saturday, September 26, at 09:30, at the Temple of St. Nicholas of Myra, in the lower temple. The service will be officiated by our rector, Fr. Antoniy, and will be followed by our traditional breakfast meal.

The Liturgy will be preceded by reader's Vespers (evening prayer) in English on Friday, September 25, at 18:00.

This morning, of Saturday, the 19th of September, we served a reader's Moleben with Akathist to St. Columba of Iona, also known as Colmcille, Enlightener of Scotland. The service was led by Fr. Deacon Georgiy, who brought an icon of Colmcille. At the end of the service, Fr. Georgiy read from the life of Colmcille.

We then gathered for a breakfast meal, which featured a large gingerbread treat gifted by Nikolo-Solbensky Monastery to us as a community. The meal was followed by catechism class for those seeking to learn more about the Orthodox faith.

Our next service in English will Divine Liturgy on Saturday, preceded by Vespers on Friday.

On Saturday, September 19, we will have catechism class in English at the Temple of St. Nicholas of Myra around 12:30, following the Moleben and breakfast. The class will be led by Joshua Laurin. We invite all who are interested in learning more about the Orthodox Faith.

English-language Bible study will be offered tomorrow evening, of Friday, September 18, at 19:15. 1 Corinthians 10:23-28 and Matthew 24:34-44, Luke 10:16-21 will be examined.

The meetings are organized by the Orthodox Educational Center of St. Felix of Burgundy and led by Subdeacon Philip Champion.

The class takes place on the second floor of the museum hall of the Temple of the Icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" on Bolshaya Ordynka Street, near Tretyakovskaya metro station.

Each class is followed by a small tea gathering.

Our next service in English will be a Moleben with Akathist to St. Columba of Iona, Enlightener of Scotland, also known as Colmcille, on Saturday, September 19, at 11:00 AM.

We previously commemorated St. Columba with a troparion on the Saturday before the day of his memory. Now, we would like to offer a full Moleben for his intercession.

The Moleben will be preceded by reader's Vespers (evening prayer) in English on Friday, September 18, at 18:00.

This past Saturday, the 12th of September, we served a reader's Moleben to St. Patrick, Enlightener and patron saint of Ireland. The service was led by Fr. Deacon Georgiy.

It is our annual tradition to serve a Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts at St. Catherine's on St. Patrick's day, March 17, and we further commemorated St. Patrick with a Moleben.

Fr. Deacon Georgiy brought a St. Brigid's cross to the service. St. Brigid of Kildare worked with St. Patrick in spreading the Gospel to Ireland.

We then gathered for a breakfast meal, during which we sang the Many Years to Joshua and Natalia on the occasion of their birthdays, and to Alexandra as she prepares for an extended trip.

Our next two services in English will be Vespers and a Moleben to St. Columba of Scotland at St. Nicholas the coming Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Fr. Daniel, rector at St. Catherine's, read a message from Metropolitan Tikhon, primate of the Orthodox Church in America, for today's commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

Today, on September 11, 2026, on the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, St. Catherine's offered a panikhida service for the innocent victims. The service was led by Fr. Daniel, rector at St. Catherine's, and was offered in English.

After the service, Fr. Daniel and the ambassadors of the United States and Canada rang the September 11th memorial bells in the courtyard of St. Catherine's.

The bells were rung seven times, four times for the moments of the destruction of each airliner, twice for the collapse of each of the two towers, and a final time for the police, firefighters, medics, and others who lost their lives in the months and years after the attacks, who sustained many injuries and were exposed to toxic materials when they rushed into the burning buildings as part of the rescue effort.

On the day of the attacks, the lives of around 20,000 people were directly endangered, but the rescue and evacuation effort saved many. During the day, before everyone had been accounted for, and before it was known how many people had been in the buildings and in the area, people following the rescue effort worldwide were faced with very large casualty estimates in the many tens of thousands, and the rescue effort became a great miracle.

Canada assisted greatly, including by hosting a large number of passengers that had been flying over or near North America when all aircraft were grounded, with many private citizens opening the doors of their homes, in addition to the government effort.
