Mythological canons correlate with language families, thereby leading the study of myth naturally to comparative linguistic analysis.
In other words, Hellenic (Greek) mythology is found among Greek language speakers, Roman myth is found among Latin speakers, Teutonic (Germanic/Norse) myth is found among Germanic language speakers, and so on.
This relationship between myth and language is universal; however the examples given here are taken specifically from the Indo-European family. What this indicates is that language and mythos evolved side by side during the earliest gestations of what would become the human ethno-cultural groups we recognize today.
