Meet a designer — Niklaus Troxler.
Willisau is a small town in Switzerland. For nearly forty years its jazz festival was known as much for who was playing as for the poster outside — hand-set, screen-printed, unmistakably his.
Niklaus Troxler has spent his career drawing jazz the way it sounds: loose, bold, occasionally dissonant. He ran the Willisau Jazz Festival from 1975 to 2009 and made a poster for nearly every concert along the way. Hundreds of them now sit in the collections of MoMA and the Stedelijk Museum.
His work is proof of something we believe in too — a poster doesn't need a big venue to matter. It needs a wall, one strong idea, and someone willing to look twice.
New rubric: every so often we introduce you to a designer whose posters we think belong on a wall.
