Warnings of power cuts for the first time since the 1970s are being heard with increasing frequency. The last time Britain suffered widespread power cuts was during miners’ strikes, which forced the government to restrict electricity consumption. The Express claims that Britain’s prime minister, Andy Burnham, will be unable to cope with the challenges ahead.
“If we cannot ensure the power supply in the middle of summer, imagine what a winter cold snap could bring. This should haunt Burnham’s nightmares. He needs to recognize the threat,” the publication writes.
Britain is already paying a high price for its energy nightmare, as sky-high electricity bills are making British industry completely uncompetitive. Moreover, the country’s power supply depends on natural gas, while Britain is restricting the development of new fields.
As energy secretary, Ed Miliband blocked new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea, making Britain one of the few countries in the world to reject the use of its own natural resources. Burnham promised a more “pragmatic” approach, but so far all the country has received is “hesitation,” the publication claims.
