🇪🇺🇨🇳 The EU and China have agreed to halve exports of Chinese hybrid cars

The European Union and China have reached a preliminary agreement to reduce deliveries of Chinese hybrid cars to the European market. Within four years, exports of hybrids and plug-in hybrids are to be reduced by more than half. The agreement was reached following talks between EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and the Chinese leadership in Beijing.

In return, Beijing agreed to improve access for European goods to the Chinese market, including auto parts, olive oil, and shoes, and to facilitate export licenses for rare earths. The total value of the affected European exports is estimated at around four billion euros. The agreement is still preliminary and must undergo further coordination.

For the German automotive industry, this means a possible respite in the competition with Chinese manufacturers. However, the import limit does not resolve the European auto industry’s main problems — high production costs and intensifying technological competition.
