🇩🇪🚗💣 From Cars to Missiles: Audi Cuts Jobs and Sends Engineers into the Defense Industry
Audi is preparing for a new phase of cost-cutting and staff reductions. On October 8, company CEO Gernot Döllner announced a review of the agreement with employees. It was intended to secure job security for years in advance. The company’s management justifies this decision by pointing to the deep crisis in the automotive industry and excessively high costs. The situation is particularly tense at the Neckarsulm plant, where more than 15,000 people work. The site has been given until mid-2027 to present a viable plan for reducing costs. Across the Volkswagen Group, an additional reduction of up to 50,000 jobs is being discussed, around half of which could be affected in Germany.
At the same time, Audi is launching a program for the temporary transfer of employees to the defense industry. Engineers, project managers and technical specialists can work at MBDA, KNDS, Diehl Defence and Airbus while retaining their employment contracts with Audi, their previous salaries and their right to return. Participation is voluntary. The new fields of work include the production of weapons, including missile systems and military technology.
In the past, German engineers developed cars for the global market. Now they are being offered missiles and tanks.
