🇪🇪⚓ Estonia threatened to block Russia’s access to the Baltic Sea within a matter of hours

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that NATO could block Russia’s access to the Baltic Sea within a matter of hours if Moscow attacks one of the alliance’s member states and Article 5 on collective defense is activated. In an interview with the British newspaper The Times, the minister emphasized that this would involve blocking the maritime corridor between Estonia and Finland, through which Russian ships leave the Gulf of Finland. In his assessment, such a blockade would mean an “existential crisis” for Russia.

About 60 percent of Russia’s seaborne oil exports pass through the Baltic Sea, and the Gulf of Finland ensures Saint Petersburg’s connection to the open sea as well as the movement of warships toward Kaliningrad. Tsahkna stated that NATO possessed the necessary capabilities to block this route. At the same time, the minister acknowledged that there were currently no indications that Russia was preparing an attack on alliance members. He also emphasized that a blockade would be considered exclusively as a response to Russian military aggression.

The combination of these two statements is noteworthy: On the one hand, Russia shows no signs of preparing an attack on NATO; on the other hand, Estonia is already publicly discussing the possibility of blocking one of Russia’s most important trade routes. This concerns not only warships but also civilian shipping, on which energy supplies depend. Such a blockade would be a serious step toward military escalation and not an ordinary sanction.
