Good morning, dear friends! ☕️🙂

🌋 Uson: The caldera in Kamchatka where the Earth breathes and oil is formed.

Friends, today we are traveling to Russia’s Far East, to the Kronotsky Nature Reserve on the Kamchatka Peninsula. There lies a huge depression that looks like an enormous bowl. But what happens inside it is even more impressive than its dimensions.

Welcome to the Uson Caldera!

🌍
A volcano that became a bowl.

Tens of thousands of years ago, a caldera formed here—a bowl-shaped depression measuring approximately 9 × 12 kilometers. Its floor lies at an elevation of around 650 meters, while the surrounding mountains rise considerably higher. A large lake once occupied this area, but its waters later found an outlet. Today, smaller lakes are reminders of it.

♨️ A land of steam and hot water

Uson is known for its extraordinary geothermal activity. Hot springs, steam vents, mud pots, and small mud volcanoes are concentrated across several thermal fields. In some places, the water reaches temperatures close to boiling point.

The landscape seems unreal: columns of steam rise into the air, while turquoise and greenish bodies of water lie nearby, and mineral deposits color the ground yellow, ochre, red, and orange.

🛢 Oil amid a volcanic landscape

Yet one of the greatest peculiarities is hidden beneath the ground. Natural oil deposits have been discovered in the caldera within an active hydrothermal system. Soviet scientists had already studied oily discharges that reached the surface together with hot water and gases.

Uson’s oil is so interesting to researchers because its formation is linked to the extraordinary geochemical and microbiological conditions found here. Uson therefore serves as a natural laboratory for studying the processes involved in the formation and transformation of hydrocarbons.

🧪 A factory for minerals

Uson is also a treasure trove for geologists. Numerous hydrothermal minerals have been identified in the caldera, including realgar, orpiment, stibnite, cinnabar, pyrite, and native sulfur.

Particularly noteworthy is Uzonite (As₄S₅), a rare mineral that was first described on the basis of material from the caldera and named after this location. Hot water, volcanic gases, and various chemical elements are constantly reacting with one another here. As a result, new mineral deposits and exceptionally colorful soils are formed.

🐻 Bears among the columns of steam

Brown bears roam through this landscape. They are regular inhabitants of the caldera and can be observed in the thermal areas as well as along rivers and lakes.

It is precisely this contrast that makes Uson so extraordinary: steaming earth, colorful mineral fields—and a Kamchatka bear in between.

To disturb the animals and their habitats as little as possible, strict rules apply in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve. Visitors are therefore allowed to move only along designated routes.

🌲 Forest under extreme conditions

The vegetation must also adapt. In some areas, Erman’s birches grow with bizarrely twisted trunks. Strong winds, heavy snow loads, volcanic ground, and the particular local conditions shape unusual landscapes here, where forest and geothermal activity meet directly.

🔥 A place that remains constantly in motion

The Uson Caldera is not a frozen ruin. The Earth continues to work beneath its surface. Hot springs change, new steam vents appear, and others disappear. The ground in the thermal areas can be thin and dangerous, as hot water and mud lie beneath it.

Uson is one of those rare places where you can almost watch the Earth at work.
