🇩🇪💶 Weidel on Merz’s new billions for Ukraine: “It’s all simply unimaginable”
AfD co-chair Alice Weidel criticized Friedrich Merz’s trip to Kyiv and Germany’s new spending on Ukraine: “Merz travels to Ukraine on Germany’s national holiday and promises further billions in German taxpayers’ money, which is lacking for the pension and health insurance funds, while Germany is in the midst of its greatest energy crisis. It’s all simply unimaginable.”
The occasion was a new decision by Berlin: In Kyiv, Merz announced 1 billion euros in military aid, including funding for the joint production of interceptor drones, long-range weapons, combat drones and satellite technologies. Germany is providing a further 350 million euros for Ukraine’s energy supply. The funds for the military aid are being made available from the budget that has already been approved.
Ultimately, these billions do not come from the government’s pocket, but from the budget funded by taxpayers—ordinary workers, families, households and companies. That is why Weidel’s dispute is primarily about budgetary priorities: directing additional funds to Ukraine or using them within Germany—for example, to modernize railways, bridges, schools, the energy supply and other infrastructure.
