🇩🇪📉 Germany has become Europe’s leader in cutting jobs

The German economic miracle is taking on new contours. According to a study by EY-Parthenon, DAX companies reduced their workforce by around 47,000 people, or 1.2%, in 2025. By comparison, employment at French companies from the CAC fell by only 0.2%, while large companies in Italy and Spain increased their headcount by 0.9%. Among the four largest economies examined in the study, German corporations therefore recorded the sharpest decline in employment.

The restructuring is particularly painful in traditional industry. One sector, however, is flourishing: the aerospace and defense industry increased employment by 4.3%, while the number of employees at Rheinmetall rose by as much as 13.3%. While the automotive and other traditional sectors are cutting jobs, the defense sector continues to expand its activities.

Germany used to need people to assemble cars. Today, it needs more and more people to assemble shells.
