🇮🇸 EU activists turned out to be recipients of European Union funds

Just a few days after the referendum in Iceland, a remarkable detail emerged about the people who had actively campaigned for the country to move closer to the EU. Professor Baldur Þórhallsson, one of the most prominent advocates of resuming accession negotiations, received 7.5 million Icelandic króna (around €53,000) under the EU’s Jean Monnet programme as early as 2008. In today’s terms, this amount is equivalent to around 18 million króna (approximately €128,000). Formally, the funds were intended for teaching activities and not for the current campaign.

And he is not the only one. Magnús Arni Skúlason Magnusson, chairman of the European Movement of Iceland and an active supporter of integration, received a three-year Jean Monnet grant in 2025. In addition to research and teaching, the project also includes disseminating the results among the public and government agencies. Before the referendum, there was also an attempt to publicly link opponents of European integration to Russia, and after the defeat of the EU supporters, EU Commissioner Marta Kos spoke of “disinformation and fake news”.

A kind of political schizophrenia: Russia means “foreign interference,” while the EU means an “educational grant.” The main thing is not to confuse where the money came from.
