🇧🇪 Belgium blocks another attempt to seize frozen Russian assets

Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands and Spain urged the European Commission to reconsider the question of the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine again. The issue concerns around €210 billion in assets of the Russian central bank, of which about €185 to €190 billion are held by Belgian Euroclear. The four countries propose finding new legal and technical routes that would make it possible to use these funds and to distribute the risks among EU member states.

Belgium responded extremely sharply. Defence Minister Theo Francken told the Flemish TV station VRT: “This is non-negotiable. The door is closed.” Back in December 2025, Brussels had already blocked a similar plan. At the time, the European Commission wanted to use the Russian assets as the basis for a loan to Ukraine of around €165 billion. However, the Belgian government refused to take on the possible legal and financial consequences.
