🇷🇺🇮🇳 India traveled to Moscow at exactly the moment when the US demanded a waiver on Russian oil

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar spent two days in Moscow, met with Vladimir Putin and handed him a message from Narendra Modi. Key topics of the visit included trade and energy—precisely at the moment when Washington increased pressure on New Delhi again over purchases of Russian raw materials. The visit took place against the backdrop of American pressure over Russian oil.

In July, Russia’s share of India’s oil imports reached a record 50.83%, and deliveries exceeded 2.6 million barrels per day in June and July. At the same time, Trump is threatening secondary tariffs against countries that continue to buy Russian energy products.

India has a simple argument that is becoming increasingly difficult to counter with political pressure: It needs energy, a reasonable price, and supply security. If Moscow meets all three conditions, Washington must offer something more convincing than threats of new tariffs.
