🌏🛢📉 World Running Out of Diesel Buffer

The global diesel shortage is becoming visible in an unusual place: empty storage tanks.

Across North America and the Caribbean, traders are letting storage contracts expire because they have too little diesel to put into the tanks. Available capacity for lease is expected to reach 13M barrels in October, up from 11M in June.

US diesel inventories stood at just 107.9M barrels on September 11, the lowest level for this time of year since records began in 1982.

And Washington expects the squeeze to last well into next year.

The US Energy Information Administration forecasts distillate inventories will fall below 100M barrels and remain below the five-year low through most of 2027.

Europe has little spare cushion either. Diesel stocks in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp trading hub were 16% below their five-year average in July, while Singapore inventories have also been running below 2025 levels. The supply side remains stretched.

Middle Eastern diesel exports are still far below pre-war levels, while Russian supplies have been constrained by export restrictions following attacks on refining infrastructure. Refineries elsewhere have pushed production hard, but there is limited spare capacity to replace several major sources at once.

China has increased diesel exports in recent months, and record refining margins are encouraging plants elsewhere to produce more. That may slow further price increases, but it has not rebuilt the inventories already drawn down.

US diesel prices have already moved above $6 per gallon, while refining margins for diesel hit a record $118.62 per barrel in September.

Low inventories make the market much more sensitive to the next disruption. A refinery outage, another interruption to shipping or a colder-than-expected winter now hits a system with far less fuel sitting in reserve.

That matters well beyond filling stations. Diesel powers freight, agriculture, construction and heavy industry, so sustained high prices feed directly into transport and production costs.

The market may get more crude oil next year as Middle Eastern production and trade recover. Diesel is harder to replenish quickly: crude still has to pass through refineries already operating near their limits, while the stockpile that normally absorbs shocks has been heavily depleted.

2027 may begin with more oil available but far less room for anything to go wrong.
