The "Palestinian question" is "the greatest historical injustice of this century", Wang told Israeli President Isaac Herzog to his face in a meeting on the sidelines of a conference in Azerbaijan on Thursday.

Beijing has been a long-standing supporter of the Palestinian cause and has maintained that a "two-state solution" is the "correct direction".

Wang says the "immediate priority" is to fully open access to Gaza and stop the continued spread of a "humanitarian catastrophe".

China is willing to work with the international community to get the parties to return to dialogue and "seek a political solution to the conflict", he said.

China maintains close ties with Iran and is the biggest buyer of Iranian oil, which had previously come under US sanctions because of Tehran's nuclear programme.

China is Israel's single largest source of imports.
