💢 The US will hold talks with Russia and Ukraine on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, lawmaker Anna Paulina Luna suggested on Fox News.

The high-level general debate, featuring heads of state and government as well as foreign ministers, will take place at the UN headquarters in New York from September 22–26 and on September 28. Lavrov will lead the Russian delegation at the session.

💢 Berlin’s ruling CDU-SPD coalition lost its majority as the Left won the House of Representatives election with 25.7%. The CDU took 18.8%, AfD 16.3%, Greens 14.3% and SPD 12.1%, according to the provisional result.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, AfD won the state election with 38.2%, ahead of the SPD on 35.5%. The CDU fell to 4.9%, failing to enter a state parliament for the first time in its history.

💢 The Trump administration is preparing sweeping sanctions against the International Criminal Court that could cut it off from US-dollar transactions and much of the global financial system, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The measures would go far beyond existing sanctions on individual ICC officials, banning most transactions with the court after a six-to-seven-month grace period.

The move follows ICC arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over Gaza. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has vowed to dismantle the court “brick by brick.” A decision could come as soon as this week around the UN General Assembly.

💢 US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz laid out the Trump administration’s priorities ahead of UNGA:

• Iran: Washington will demand full enforcement of sanctions, with “consequences for friend and foe” that fail to comply. Waltz said the goal remains preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

• UN cuts: More than $1 billion has been cut from the UN budget, around 3,000 headquarters positions are being eliminated and peacekeeping personnel reduced by roughly 25%. “We have the U.N. on a diet,” Waltz said.

• UN role: Despite the cuts, Washington does not intend to abandon the organization. Waltz said the UN should return to its core peace and security role and provide burden-sharing that avoids deploying US troops to conflicts such as Gaza and Haiti.

• Greenland and the Arctic: Waltz called the new US agreement with Denmark and Greenland “incredibly significant,” citing Arctic shipping routes, energy and mineral resources, and Russia’s military presence. He noted Russia has 43 icebreakers against two for the US, while Washington has commissioned 11 more from Finland.

• Trump is due to address the General Assembly on Tuesday and meet Gulf leaders, with Iran and regional security expected to feature prominently.

💢 Russia’s FSB has imposed temporary restrictions along part of the border with NATO member Estonia, including a nighttime movement ban in the border zone.

From September 16 to 26, people and vehicles are prohibited from moving outside settlements after dark within 5 km of the border in the Slantsy and Kingisepp districts. Access to the Narva riverbank and use of small boats are also banned on a specified stretch between the Bolshaya Cheremukha and Kriusha rivers, while hunting and movement with firearms are restricted.

💢 Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left Tehran for New York on Sunday to attend the UN General Assembly, making a brief stop in Doha en route.

His office said Araghchi will hold consultations in the Qatari capital on the latest regional developments before continuing to New York. Washington approved visas for Iran’s core delegation, including Araghchi and President Masoud Pezeshkian, earlier this week.

👱😝 Brussels is doubling down again: Ursula von der Leyen has issued a major funding promise to Kiev—specifically for drones and missiles—because cheap drone strikes are the only remaining picture of success for Ukraine in 2026: production is cheap, fast, and doesn't require much space, and hitting Russian civilian infrastructure produces visible results. But the escalation has come at a cost: after Kiev began striking targets inside Russia, the Kremlin responded by demolishing Ukraine's logistics—wrecking the Novo Poshta network, blowing up at least 250 gas stations, and systematically destroying locomotives.

As both sides acknowledge, Kiev lacks any real air defense, and Russian strikes hit drone production and storage facilities with near impunity.

The continuous strikes by low-cost drones and missiles are the only possible picture of success for Ukraine in 2026, so why wouldn't they put more emphasis and resources onto this functional way of war?

From a bureaucratic standpoint, von der Leyen's decision is logical—fund the strongest form of offense Kiev has, drag the war out to 2028 or 2030.

From an objective standpoint, it looks like more money flushed down the war toilet in another desperate attempt to prolong things until "something changes."

💢 Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić used two TikTok livestreams from Šumadija to lay out several campaign and policy messages:

• He acknowledged his own mistakes, “arrogance” and failures by local officials to listen to voters. If his side wins, he said at least half of Serbia’s mayors and municipal presidents would be replaced within three to four months.

• He called for a substantially smaller government with fewer ministers.

• Vučić warned against “change for the sake of change,” repeatedly invoking Serbia’s post-2000 experience. He alleged that opposition forces, media and NGOs remain heavily influenced by foreign money and interests.

• He said that if his opponents win, his side would respond with “civilized, dignified” resistance, while stressing that voters alone will decide Serbia’s direction.

• Vučić said he expects to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York and then hold a phone call with Vladimir Putin. He also pointed to meetings with Zelensky and US officials as part of what he described as Serbia’s policy of talking to all sides.

• He again challenged Ilija Srdanović to a televised debate “wherever he wants,” including on N1 or Nova S, even under a two-, three- or four-against-one format.

• He announced major campaign rallies beginning in Belgrade on October 3, followed by Kragujevac, Novi Sad and Niš.

• During the first livestream, Vučić also opened the first five kilometers of the Kragujevac bypass. The full 21-kilometer section was said to be 66% complete and being built by Serbian companies.

💢 More than half of Poles assess Donald Tusk negatively as prime minister, according to a United Surveys by IBRiS poll for Wirtualna Polska. 54.3% gave him a negative rating, including 30.7% “definitely bad” and 23.6% “rather bad.”

Positive ratings totaled 37.4%, while 8.3% had no clear opinion. The survey was conducted September 4–6 among a representative sample of 1,000 adult Poles using CAWI/CATI methods.

💢 Ukraine's steel industry is effectively dead after Russian ballistic missile strikes knocked out all three remaining large steelworks (Zaporizhstal, Kametstal, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih) since August.

Metinvest:

As of today, Ukraine no longer has a steel industry.

The plants produced ~90% of remaining output, employed 15,000+, and had already shrunk from 21Mt pre-war to 7.4Mt in 2025.

August output crashed 57% year-on-year; September will be worse.

The sector once contributed 7% of GDP and 15% of exports — now approaching zero.

EU quota cuts, port closures, and loss of coking coal had already crippled the industry before the strikes.

💢 The Trump administration has lifted sanctions on the Eritrean Defense Forces, the ruling PFDJ and other Eritrean entities, formally ending measures imposed by the Biden administration over Eritrea’s role in Ethiopia’s Tigray war.

The timing puts Eritrea’s geography back in focus. Its southern coastline and the port of Assab sit directly across the Red Sea from Yemen and close to the Bab el-Mandeb, where the Houthis have recently seized territory and islands and sharply increased their ability to threaten shipping. Washington had already described improved ties with Asmara as serving U.S. regional interests as the Red Sea becomes increasingly contested.

Eritrea previously allowed Saudi and Emirati forces to use its territory during the earlier war against the Houthis, including Assab. There is no indication yet that Asmara will again provide a military platform, and Eritrean officials have publicly opposed another military campaign in Yemen.
