Ecosia CEO Christian Kroll said Mistral’s models are “a year behind” competitors, citing poor performance, recurring server problems and concerns over its dependence on foreign investors.
Ecosia, which replaced OpenAI with Mistral in May, says switching to open-source models has cut costs by roughly half while improving quality and performance.
Kroll believes Europe can compete in AI by building on Chinese-backed open models rather than spending billions developing its own.
