Heinz Ewald congratulates his wingman Gerhard Barkhorn after his 1000th sortie on the 23rd of January 1944 in Crimea.

Gerhard Barkhorn was the second-highest scoring ace in history, with 301 confirmed aerial victories. Barkhorn survived the war and attained the rank of General in the Luftwaffe (Bundeswehr), a distinction shared by several of his JG 52 colleagues. He passed away on January 11, 1983, as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.

Arie Zondervan (1910–ca. 1983) grew up as an only child in a Protestant family. He was born in Berlin but moved back to the Netherlands in 1918 with his Dutch parents. After HBS, he studied Dutch-Indies law in Leiden. He actually wanted to become a naval officer but was rejected due to his poor eyesight.

At a young age, Zondervan developed fascist ideas. In 1933, he and his parents joined the NSB, and later he became active in the WA. In 1939, he became adjutant to NSB leader Anton Mussert. When Germany attacked the Netherlands, Zondervan proved his worth as a conscripted officer.

In 1941, Zondervan enlisted in the Netherlands Legion to set a good example and inspire the Dutch to fight against the USSR.

An early photo of SS men bearing the Totenkopf flag at the Zossen training area in 1933, shortly after the NSDAP's rise to power.

This particular Totenkopf flag predates even the SS-Totenkopfverbände 'SS Death's Head Battalions' and the 3rd Waffen-SS Panzer Division Totenkopf.
