🐞 Marian symbolism is also present in another revered insect, the bee. Among the South Slavs, the silkworm is considered the Virgin Mary's worm. Names for the ladybug featuring the component "grandmother" are found in all three groups of Slavic languages, which allows D. Mladenova to consider them archaic and to attribute them to the era of Proto-Slavic commonality.
Given the ladybug's role as an intermediary between the world of the living and the world of the dead or ancestors, these names can be linked to "grandmother" as a kinship term, reflecting the perception of the ladybug as an ancestress.
